Cape Town traffic in overdrive compared to Jozi

JOBURG - Known as a world-class city, Cape Town has been named the worst traffic congested city in South Africa for 2013

Cape Town has been named the worst traffic congested city in South Africa by road navigation manufacturer TomTom.

This came from a the company’s Annual Global Traffic Congestion Index 2013 South Africa report, released by the company, which analyses traffic patterns in major cities in South Africa.

Surprisingly, the busiest city in South Africa, Johannesburg, came second with 25 percent while East London rounded off the top three at 22 percent.

The report also found that the country had a congestion level of 21 percent which means that travel time has increased by an average of 21 percent during peak traffic in the country. The top six cities are:

  •  Cape Town 27 percent (33)
  •  Johannesburg 25 percent (48)
  •  East London 22 percent (65)
  •  Pretoria 22 percent (73)
  •  Durban 18 percent (98)
  •  Bloemfontein 12 percent (134/138)

TomTom also released an annual global Index report with the top 10 most congested cities in the world. The top three cities for 2013 are:

  •  Moscow 74 percent
  •  Istanbul 62 percent
  •  Rio de Janeiro 55 percent
