UPDATE: ANC cartoon protest gains momentum

SANDTON - PRIMEDIA chief executive officer, Roger Jardine said they take the protesters' grievances about the cartoon seriously.

“We hear what you have said and will take time to reflect. Lets resolve this,” he added.

The ANC’s Zizi Kodwa said, “We still have scars from racism, but look forward to a non-racial south africa.” Kodwa said no person must insult other people.

“Let’s get involved in the debate about media freedom,” said Jardine.

There was a slow start to the protest on 30 May outside Primedia offices after the ANC announced that it would picket against an EWN cartoon published on its website.

The crowd of protesters picked up at 8.45am after it was said it would start at 8am.

More protesters were seen holding placards reading: ‘Racism does not belong here’, ‘Racism equals to hatred’, and ‘Racism equal to holocaust’.

The cartoon depicts ANC members and ANC voters as clowns. The ‘Poephols and Clowns’ cartoon also angered some of the public and they took to Twitter to express their opinions.

@shagucci tweeted: SA media is abusing the freedom of speech. Typical example #EWNcartoon

However, Not everyone on Twitter agreed and felt the cartoon was not offensive or racist.

@3RAVO2 tweeted: #EWNcartoon #congressofclowns people offended by the cartoon are the people that blame apartheid for everything, thus Truth = Racism.

A Sandton Chronicle reporter is tweeting from outside Primedia. She said The ANC’s Zizi Kodwa has requested to speak to the EWN news editor. “The police said they will bring her down”.

The protesters are still waiting for the news editor to speak to them.
