Coleraine Drive prioritised by roads agency

RIVER CLUB - The repair of Coleraine and Ballyclare drives has been prioritised by the Johannesburg Roads Agency.

This announcement was made at a press conference at the roads agency offices in Johannesburg. The initiative is part of the City of Johannesburg’s programme to repair flood damage and upgrade road infrastructure in the area.

Skhumbuzo Macozoma, the roads agency’s managing director said Coleraine Drive in Riverclub was allocated an estimated R6.1 million for repairs and Ballyclare Drive in Bryanston was allocated an estimated R751 000.

This comes after a portion of Coleraine Drive collapsed and the road had to be closed. Macozoma said the road would be reconstructed and a larger culvert would be built. “Stormwater and scour protection will be added to prevent damage to the structure in the future,” said Macozoma. “The road will be fully closed for the duration of the project.”

Tendaivnhu Madzikanda, the engineer working on both sites said Coleraine Drive would take an estimated four to six months to repair and Ballyclare Drive would take two to three months.

Macozoma said the steel handrails on Ballyclare Drive would be replaced and concrete barriers would be installed.

The roads agency has blamed the heavy rains for the damage to the roads. Macozoma said, “The important thing for us to do now is to keep repairing the potholes. The long term solution is in the resurfacing programme. The repair work will be combined with upgrading work in such a way that the structures are functional and operational in the long term without the need for continuous emergency repairs.”

The roads agency encourages residents to report all road and storm water related issues including potholes to 0860 562 874, hotline@jra.org.za or @MyJra on Twitter.
