Power crisis – says who?

Larry Dare writes:

Considering how hard Eskom is trying to assist customers and at the same time upgrade power usage without having to power shed, it confounds me that the City of Johannesburg does not assist or appear to co-operate in their use of Eskom power.

As an example, street lights are frequently left on 24 hours a day while businesses are trying to assist by only having a security light on at night.

And on a personal note, I have a home on Wendy Road in Wendywood where I have lived for some 27 Years.

Wendy Road is a short road approximately 1 000 metres long. About two years ago the municipality, without consultation with the residents, put street lights on Eskom’s power line poles.

Why? Surely this is counterproductive to Eskom’s task and with the power problems experienced.

However, to confound matters further, the municipality is presently erecting light poles on the other side of the single-lane suburban road. Is Eskom aware of this and are they in consultation with the municipality?

Further to this, are these lights in both instances erected under a tender process, and if so, the duplication is not logical as there was no urgency. It therefore reeks of either extreme incompetence with a feathering of possible corruption – or possibly an excuse to put rates up at the expense of Eskom and residents.
