Mother of abandoned baby still behind bars

MARLBORO - The woman who abandoned her baby on a street in Marlboro was refused bail on 17 February.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Bramley Police said the woman was refused bail because she had no permanent residential address. “She is still in police custody at a prison in Johannesburg South. She is expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 24 February,” said Maphakela.

He said the abandoned baby had been released from hospital and was now been cared for at a children’s home in Johannesburg. “The baby is doing very well and she is healthy,” added Maphakela.

The baby girl was found crying at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 4th Street in Marlboro by a passerby. The police found the infant’s mother in Springs, Ekurhuleni where she was arrested and charged with abandonment of a newborn baby.
