Take in a Chaplin masterpiece

SAXONWOLD - Charlie Chaplin's ability to defy the advent of 'talkies' by remaining 'silent' was one of the marks of this actor's greatness.

The Majestic Film Society will offer film lovers a chance to see Chaplin in action when it screens the 1931 masterpiece City Lights later this month.

According to the society’s Selwyn Klass, the film provided the ideal romantic illusion for Chaplin’s gentleman tramp character as he pursued a blind flower seller, played by Virginia Cherrill.

Harry Meyers took on the role of the millionaire who drunkenly befriended the tramp, providing the catalyst for a case of mistaken identity.

“Chaplin’s direction as counterpoint of grace and charm motivates the plot and enables the tramp to keep up the pretence… that he is rich,” said Klass.

Of course, things don’t quite go according to plan, but despite obnoxious newsboys and the slamming of a cell door, the film does have its happy ending.

The heart-warming romantic comedy will be screened on 26 January at the Ditsong Museum of Military History auditorium, 22 Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 6pm, and will be followed by a catered supper with wine. Klass will provide an introduction to the film prior to the screening.
