Go down the rabbit hole

JOBURG - Lovers of all things Wonderland will soon be able to see Alice, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and other beloved characters on stage.

The People’s Theatre at Joburg Theatre will open its 2014 programme with an interactive stage adaptation of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.

From 3 March until 20 April, audiences can join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland, where she will chase the White Rabbit, race the Dodo Bird, get tied up with the Tweedies, rap with a bubble-blowing caterpillar, and beat the Queen of Hearts at her own game.

“Alice in Wonderland is a fast-paced stage adaptation full of interactions, and with brand new musical arrangements of classic Disney songs [such as] I’m Late and The Un-Birthday Song,” said the theatre’s Keith Smith.

Smith’s colleague, Jill Girard, said this year would bring three new Disney productions with new musical arrangements to the theatre. In addition to Alice in Wonderland, audiences can also look forward to Pinocchio from 19 May until 10 August, and the year-end finale, Beauty and the Beast from 3 November until 24 December.

A new storybook theatre will breathe new life into some of the stories of that master of fairytales, Hans Christian Andersen.

“Thumbelina, The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, The Tinder Box, the Ugly Duckling… all the Andersen favourites will be on stage from 1 September until 5 October,” said Girard.

“The audience will be involved in every aspect of this ‘theatre in education production’.”
