Sandton resident pays global tribute to Madiba

HAVING an Irish accent helped Sandton resident Francesca Teifel (16) get a part in the National Geographic Africa’s Mandela Tribute.

Teifel was one of the few youngsters who were selected to audition for the show, and auditioned by reciting an excerpt of Madiba’s famous speech from the Rivonia Trial. The footage showed children representing different nations of the world. According to Teifel’s agent Addi Lang, the show was looking for people from South Africa, as well as different countries around the world with different accents. “Teifel’s paternal family came from Ireland, so it was an easy choice to put her forward for an audition,” said Lang.

Teifel recited an extract from Mandela’s speech at the Rivonia Trial that said: “During my lifetime I have dedicated my life to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which I hope to live for and to see realised. But, My Lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” She felt very emotional and very close to Madiba while reciting the speech and felt very honoured to have been a part of this tribute.
