An attitude of gratitude

SAN Salvador Home has expressed their gratitude to the community who support their home and workshop.

According to Margy Langschmidt, the home has survived with the help of a few generous and caring sponsors from corporate companies and friends, as “government subsidies and disability grants are negligible and there is always shortfall each and every month”.

Currently, the home has 60 intellectually disabled persons who reside at San Salvador and 50

disabled men and women who come to the home daily to work at Sally’s Workshop.

With 19 non-paying residents from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and other

persons who have outlived their families, they cannot afford to pay for their fees.

Run by Louisa Botha who manages a strong team of nursing staff, care-givers and volunteers, the team makes sure residents are provided with medical care, dietary requirements, social interaction and work stimulation.

Langschmidt encourages routine in the home by providing an array of activities. After their morning chapel sessions, the residents are broken up into groups and interact with weaving, knitting, bead making and various skills.

Sally’s Workshop includes packaging of products, collating of documents, sealing products on a skin pack machine, gardening in their garden for growth area and woodwork projects.

Langschmidt appreciates the support around Christmas time, and if people would like to donate money, toiletries; medium and large T-shirts, size 3-7 slippers; Christmas crackers and treats for the home are always well received.
