How to renovate your home

Renovating your home may be a tiresome and frustrating period, but it can come with big rewards in the end.

Before you make any renovations, make sure you get the following done.

1. Get approval

Plan your renovations well in advance, getting local council approval for structural work, as extensions or additions can take several weeks, even months. If you live in a heritage-listed property this process may take even longer.

2. Ensure your renovations are legal

Find out whether the house has been recently been renovated or extended, check with the local council to see if a building permit was issued and whether it is legal. If you’re extending, check requirements and legalities to avoid disappointment.

3. Start shopping

We all want good value for our money, so make sure you shop around and get the best deals by comparing different prices from different suppliers. Don’t forget to ask for discounts where you qualify.

4. Do it yourself

If you have the time and energy, get some of the work done yourself or with the help of family members – this will help save some money. Leave the heavy-lifting to contractors because some things are better done by experts, however do what you can.
