SANDTON – Bollards have been erected around George Lea South Park. Ward 90 councillor Gordon Mackay said the residents of the area were responsible for the development. “I was initially alone in the fight to get bollards around this park and as soon as the residents joined me, action was taken. I hope residents know the power that they possess. Without the support of the residents this would have not happened,” he said. Mackay primarily wanted the bollards around the park to stop cars from driving through and endangering the safety of visitors. “The bollards will now also stop illegal dumpers from easily accessing the park,” he added. Mackay said City Parks was a major contributor to the development. “City Parks answered the residents’ call and came on board to find the money for the bollards,” he said. City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley added that Eskom was funding the contractor for the bollards as well as the contractor removing the illegal dumping at the park. “The bollards will act as a deterrent for illegal dumping. We hope that this initiative will contribute towards stopping the illegal dumping that occurs at the park,” added Moodley.
