Faulty street lights in Bryanston pose a threat

BRYANSTON resident George Lazarevic was shocked to find live wires and cables hanging out of a street light pole outside his property on 25 October.

He said City Power had been busy with street lights on Elgin Road. “I was shocked to notice that the attendant workers were in so much of a hurry to knock-off work, and not complete the job at hand,” he said. “All of the electrical conductors were left protruding out of the body aperture of a lighting standard and its appropriate secure cover abandoned on the ground.”

There were other street lights on that road that were in the same condition. He said, “This is sheer irresponsibility on the part of the electricians because some of these live conductors were bare and others were covered with plastics sheaths. An inquisitive child could easily reach and meddle with the wiring to be greeted with a shocking outcome.”

Sydney Mphahlele of City Power said the cables belonged to Telkom and were not the property of City Power. Nonetheless, Lazarevic said the faulty street light outside of his property and the rest of his street were rectified on 30 October by City Power technicians.
