Man-made cave on Impala Road

WARD 109 councillor Lillian Kekana uncovered a man-made cave on Impala Road.

The discovery was made during an illegal dumping raid. Kekana was accompanied by the Metro police when an inspection of the dumping area was conducted.

Two men were found outside the cave and another one was inside. It appeared that all three men lived inside the cave. It was equipped with a carpet inside, a sponge mat to sleep on, blankets, clothes, books and other belongings.

“I can’t believe these people have been living here,” said Kekana. The men could not say how long they had been living there. The cave appeared to be about two to three metres deep. The men claimed that they came from the Eastern Cape and that they had been using the building rubble around them to construct the cave. The police instructed them to pack up their things and leave the area.

“This shows that these men have some building skills that can be utilised,” added Kekana. She was worried about the unhygienic living conditions the three men were living in and wondered if there were other man-made caves in other areas.
