Kidnapping thwarted at Michelangelo Towers

SANDTON - Police intervened in a kidnapping at the Michelangelo Towers when they arrested two suspects as the exchange was meant to take place in the early hours of the morning on 15 May.

Sandton police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete said, “On 14 November at approximately 7pm, a man was walking around at Nelson Mandela Square. He was approached by a man who accused him of stealing money. The victim was then taken to Michelangelo Towers where he was beaten by accomplices of the suspect. The victim was told to phone a friend who could bring money before they would release the victim.”

“The victim contacted a friend and explained the situation and he then came to the Sandton police station later that night and arranged to make the exchange,” said Cloete.
“The friend of the victim phoned the kidnappers and told them to come outside the Michaelangelo Towers as he had the money, and they had to bring the victim.”

The police officers arrested two male suspects in their thirties and recovered the victim. The suspects were taken to the Sandton police station and charged with kidnapping and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates Court the following day.
