A new eight-part series spotlighting 11 South African creators, debuted in Sandown, offering in-depth looks into their journeys and successes.

TikTok has unveiled its latest initiative, the #AfricanAllStars series, at the Artisty in Sandown, in partnership with South African entertainment commentator Phil Mphela.

This eight-part series shines a spotlight on 11 standout South African content creators, offering an in-depth look into their personal journeys, creative pivots, and successes, both on and beyond the platform.

The episodes, each running between 10 to 15 minutes, highlight how these individuals have transformed unexpected career paths into full-time content creation ventures. From media personalities and musicians, to foodies and small business owners, the series captures the diverse talents and voices that make up South Africa’s growing digital creator economy.

Mphela, known for his dedication to spotlighting talent in the entertainment industry, leads engaging conversations with creators like DJ_DooWap, known for her energetic performances, OverthinkingFootball, with his sports takes, solo travel content creator GoPhari, and Siyabunny and Colourme__sim, winners of the TikTok Sub-Saharan Africa 2024 Creator Awards.

Boniswa Sidwaba, head of content operations in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasised TikTok’s commitment to celebrating African talent, stating that the series will inspire and educate upcoming creators on content creation and digital storytelling.

The backdrop to this initiative is South Africa’s staggering youth unemployment rate of 45.5%. As traditional job avenues narrow, many young people are turning to digital platforms, like TikTok, to build careers. Creators like Tadeus have used TikTok to launch music careers and secure acting roles, while others, like life_with_lerato, have turned their pandemic hobbies into global brand partnerships.
