Local college students support school nutrition programme
Generosity in action with education students fuel nutrition programme with major food donation.
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, students from The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton’s faculty of education recently concluded a month-and-a-half-long food drive, collecting and donating over 200 nonperishable food items to Summerwood Primary School’s Nutrition Programme (SNP).

The initiative, which began with a simple wish list provided by the school, quickly grew as students across the faculty of education rallied together to surpass expectations.
The food items donated included rice, pilchards, samp and beans, maize meal, and packets of soup.
According to Anto Kagisho, the communications person at the campus, these contributions will play a vital role in supporting the SNP, which has been feeding around 200 disadvantaged learners daily for over 25 years.
“The handover was carried out by some of the education students who are currently completing their teaching experience at Summerwood Primary School. In addition to the food items, the students also donated handmade classroom decorations, enriching the educational environment for the young learners.”

Nomthandazo Ndaba, deputy principal of Summerwood Primary School, expressed her gratitude.
“We are happy about the large donation that we have received from The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton’s faculty of education students. It will help us as a school to continue doing the work that we do for our learners and their families.”
Kagisho pointed out that this initiative reflects The IIE’s Varsity College’s commitment to fostering a sense of citizenship and social responsibility among its students.
“By encouraging involvement in community engagement projects like this, the institution not only contributes to local communities but also enhances the holistic development of its students, preparing them to be socially conscious educators in the future.”
