Persistent water leak in Parkmore a cause for concern

Parkmore residents take matters into their own hands and step up as road conditions worsen after water pipe issues.

Residents of Parkmore have voiced growing concerns over a persistent water leak along Holt Street.

A resident, Susan Kemp, reported the issue to JW after noticing the leak in front of her residence.
“Joburg Water replaced the faulty pipe approximately two months ago, but the road was not reinstated, which led to further complications.”
According to Kemp, the situation has worsened considerably since the pipe replacement.

“The road was never properly restored after JW worked,” she stated, noting that the ongoing traffic over the unrepaired section appears to have caused the pipe to break again. This has resulted in renewed water leakage, creating two significant holes in the road surface.

Frustrated by the lack of action, Kemp, along with residents like Ronald Ncube, took it upon themselves to mitigate the immediate dangers posed by the damaged road.

“We filled the holes with stones and sand to make the road drivable again and redirected the leaking water away from the road onto the sidewalk,” explained Ncube. Despite their efforts, the underlying issue remains unresolved.

Kemp escalated the matter to Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, highlighting the safety hazards posed by the damaged road and the environmental impact of the continuous water leak. “It’s concerning that despite numerous reports, the problem
persists, posing risks to both motorists and pedestrians,” said Kemp.

Williams said the last report he received was from a resident on June 18 who drew his attention to ‘a large pothole’. “I escalated to JRA on the same day and received this response: ‘The team will inspect and prioritise. Will send a standby team to make it safe.’He added he had gathered from the Sandton Chronicle’s inquiry that the job had not been done.

“I have again escalated… the Strijdom Park depot manager said he would get the team to prioritise Holt Street.”

JW was contacted for comment but none was received at the time of going online.
