Traffic calming measure on Sandton slipway not going to happen

It doesn’t seem like Johannesburg Road Agency has plans to add traffic curbing fixtures where Sutherland Avenue turns into St Andrews Road.

Have you ever wondered what qualifies a road to have traffic-curbing measures installed by the Johannesburg Road Agency?

As recently reported, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) was contacted to find out whether there’s any intention to add traffic calming measures to slow motorists down at the corner of Sutherland Avenue and St Andrews Road.

The pothole at the corner was filled with water again on August 16.

The turning point between the two ways, in Hurlingham, had become the site of a recurring water leak. According to Johannesburg Water (JW), this leak had been backfilled on July 29. The next step for the entity was to issue a job card to the JRA for reinstatement.

When JRA responded with feedback on August 6, acting head of regional operations Khaya Gqibitole said the agency was yet to receive an issued job card concerning the site.

This turn-point between Sutherland Avenue and St Andrews Road in Hurlingham cannot catch a break from potholes and water leaks.

“JRA has no record of a Joburg Water excavation or wayleave on the reported section of the road. However, an inspection [was] scheduled for August 5 to assess the defect and schedule accordingly for repairs. The date for repairs will be confirmed in the course of this week still,” Gqibitole said.

Feedback from the acting head of mobility and freight, Sipho Nhlapo, indicated that the agency had decided against the issuing of traffic-curbing measures on the slipway. “Since there is no intersection, there isn’t a legal justification for a Stop sign,” Nhlapo said.

JRA and JW were contacted with follow-up enquiries on August 16 about whether a job card was issued towards having the road reinstated. On the same day, Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams was also contacted, asking if any residents or commuters had contacted him with concerns over the awkward turning point on the slipway. Responses will be printed as we receive them.
