Redhill matriculant Max Fuchs talks about what inspires her artistry

RedFest is an opportunity to experience the surreal portrayals of moments captured by Redhill School matriculant Max Fuchs.

RedFest returned to Morningside this year, and with it came along some familiar faces that are known to have a future in the domain of fine arts.

This year was Redhill school matriculant Max Fuchs’s third year exhibiting at the art festival. At the weekend-long event’s opening ceremony held on July 25, Fuchs seized her opportunity to reflect on her process as an artist. She started by explaining what changes she had undergone through participating in the festival.

“Two years ago, when I started painting, I was classically trained, I focused on realism,” Fuchs reflected. “But then I discovered that I kind of hate realism. I prefer this kind of more graphic, slightly realistic – but still much more graphic style.”

Fuchs appreciatively expressed how her current style had rejuvenated her love for photography, a year into exploring its ranges. Using her current technique, which still carries traces of her background in realism, Fuchs was exhibiting works which she said were inspired by images of real people she had come across.

“I started with the Prussian-blue piece; it’s such a dark ink that I needed some way to create a harsh contrast between the woman and the background… I wanted something a little more ethereal to make her pop out even more. Then I just kept the theme going. I use acrylic on watercolour paper.”
