Parkmore artists exhibit their crafts

Field and Study’s group of artists hosted an art exhibition to showcase their creation to the Parkmore community.

The Field and Study Artists’ group, who make use of the Field and Study Centre for meet-ups, hosted an exhibition of their artwork at the serene and tranquil venue.

The event, held on July 13, presented an opportunity for local artists to display and sell some of their creations – some exhibiting for the first time.

Sandton local artist Helen Van Der Berg, exhibiting her work for the first time, shared the journey of how she came to realise art as her hobby, talking about what inspires her work.

Bettna Raffalsky was born with a truly remarkable talent which allows her to realistically capture life.

“I started painting after I got divorced, about 20-odd, years ago. I decided that I needed something to do to keep myself occupied,” said Van Der Berg, whose work mostly captures the natural environment.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the sea, and trees are so important to the planet,” Van Der Berg continued. “Just anything to do with the sea, and trees, like the ancient trees of the world. The Baobab is my favourite tree.”

Mark Blair, a fellow artist and group member, told us about the mediums he works in as an artist, both painting and pottery.

“I’m predominantly an oil painter. Most of my paintings are done on canvas paper. I love the texture, and the information it gives back to artists,” Blair said. “For me, ceramics are a natural extension of my whole process. Quite a lot of the art that I make depicts ceramics. I love the tactile nature of ceramics. Also, to make something that’s useful feels particularly valuable.”

Janyce Dalziel, also exhibiting at the event, lauded it as an opportunity for the community’s artists to put their best foot forward, and showcase their talents. Dalziel also emphasised how perfectly suited to their event the venue was. However, Dalziel lamented their art group’s inability to take on more members.

“We are full at the moment, which is a problem,” Dalziel said. “As artists, we always want to be able to show our work, and get them out into the market. This is a such a beautiful manor house, that we decided that we would host an exhibition here, and share our art with the people of Sandton.”

Let’s hope this is the first of many exhibitions from the group.
