Crawford toddlers fill jars of hope on Mandela Day

Crawford International Sandton pre-primary learners spent Nelson Mandela Day filling Jars of Hope with love.

The legacy of President Nelson Mandela inspires fellowship, respect and hope for a better future.

This year, the learners of Crawford International Sandton pre-primary school contributed to this lasting legacy by filling Jars of Hope with food items, and love.

The school joined many institutions across Sandton and South Africa in honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela with 67 minutes of community engagement on July 18. Pre-primary school teacher Bianca Fleishman, who arranged the initiative for the learners, said activities such as packing jars of hope helped children feel connected to their community.

“Jars of Hope are simple yet powerful tools for teaching young children about empathy and social responsibility,” said Fleishman. “It shows them that even small actions can make a big difference.”

Fleishman added working together with peers, teachers, and family members fostered a sense of teamwork and cooperation among learners and were essential qualities for the children’s overall development. She said the day created a platform to teach learners about Mandela’s legacy of dedicated service to others.

Oliver (5) created a rewarding memory for Nelson Mandela.

“Teaching children about Mandela’s values encourages them to carry forward these principles throughout their lives, helping to build a more compassionate and just society. Each jar, filled with items like rice, lentils, and soup mix, represents a meal for someone who might otherwise go hungry. This activity not only provides immediate relief to those in need but also instils important values in children from a young age.”

More than 240 Jars of Hope were filled and will be donated to One Small Act of Kindness for distribution at the organisation’s various soup kitchens across Johannesburg.
