Stalwart’s last ride along Winnie Mandela Drive

Traffic halted in Sandton for the funeral procession of Dr Ernest Motsoko Pheko along Winnie Mandela Drive.

Residents in Sandton and surrounding suburbs will have noticed a procession on May 4 along Winnie Mandela Drive between 14:00 and 15:00.

Traffic was slowed dramatically as a crowd chanted alongside a slow-moving convoy, accompanying a political hero and historian to his final resting place.

The procession, at first, appeared to this journalist to be a protest proceeding down the drive. However, fleeting interactions with persons in the convoy of vehicles revealed the event to be the final journey of revered South African lawyer, academic and political figure, Dr Motsoko Ernest Pheko (93).

Born in Lesotho in November 1930, Pheko moved to South Africa with his brother shortly after the death of their parents. He joined the liberation movement of South Africa in the 1960s towards crafting an internationally recognised legacy as an indigenous scholar, revolutionary, and legal practitioner.

The procession to Dr Motsoko Pheku’s final place of rest has a police escort through Sandton.

Pheko’s procession made its way to Soweto, taking the historic route along the outskirts of Sandton.

Pheko died in Johannesburg on April 19.
