Improvement of players recognised at Team Key

Sandton-based cricket team encourages their players to keep trying their best in everything

The formation of Team Key in 2022 marked the beginning of an exciting journey for a group of cricket enthusiasts.

A mix of active and non-active players formed mainly for social games and to have fun with friends and teammates every weekend was the aim of forming this cricket team.

According to Mojeed Adiamo, the social media manager, they host braai events, a night out with team members, quiz nights, and sometimes a short vacation trip to keep things fun.

“In our team, we encourage individuals to trust their skills, and sometimes insight from our experienced players helps. We just try everyone out and play them where they seem fit, just to give everyone a chance to enjoy their Saturday afternoon.”

He added that their strategic approach is to build on their skills and emphasise the basics.

“We are a good bowling team; that is our strength, and we work around that. We know we can bowl out the opposition, so we try to make sure they do not get past a total we figure out we can chase on the day of the game.”

A proud moment for Team Key.

Adiamo emphasised that their leadership and communications skills are great and simple, as they have a WhatsApp group, and that most of their strategies are carried out on the day of the game to accommodate every player.

“Having a captain who runs the show has made things easier, so we do that with the help of the team captain and input from players.”

He elaborates that they encourage their players to stay fit as much as they can to prevent injuries, as each player has the responsibility of looking after their personal fitness.

“Our pre-match rituals are very simple; we only chat as a team before we go on to the field of play. We also make sure that every player does not overthink the game and just approaches it like every other game.”

Adiamo highlighted that the short-term goal for the team is to have fun as much as possible while working towards securing the league title, and their long-term goal is to be recognised around the world and also participate in World Championships.

“We look at the positives of the day and the improvement of players.”

He explained that they have a social media page that has just started and is still growing, and they are engaging with fans offline and have fans present at games to show support.

“We applaud them at the end of the game. We are only a small team, but when we see a child in the net practising on match days, we do advise as a senior and experienced player.”
