Discovery employees prepare 700 meals for Joburg NPO and Mould Empower Serve.

Cooking 700 meals for Joburg NPO and Mould Empower Serve is a team effort by Discovery employees at the Vitality Healthy Food Studio.

Discovery staff join hands for the greater good at the Vitality Healthy Food Studio to cook 700 meals for Joburg non-profit organisations, and Mould Empower Serve (MES).

The cooking marathon took place at Discovery in Sandton on July 20, and the meals were delivered to three venues run by MES around Johannesburg. These included crèches, after-school facilities, and shelters for adults.

Soup or a warm meal gives the ultimate comfort. That was the collective purpose of about 200 Discovery employees who came together at the Vitality Healthy Food Studio at Discovery’s Sandton campus this week to chop, slice, dice, and boil delicious vegetables and other healthy ingredients.

Their time in the kitchen, as part of Discovery’s winter soup drive, gave everyone a welcome break from their daily grind and resulted in 700 healthy meals, and 250l of soup being delivered to children and adults supported by MES in central Johannesburg.

Head of Vitality marketing Celeste Williams highlights a special week at the Vitality Healthy Food Studio, where participants prepared meals for MES. The rooftop venue was filled with laughter and aromas, supporting the team’s efforts to provide basic needs and restore lives. These events are part of Discovery’s larger purpose for good.

Everyone had fun giving their time and cooking skills to this collective cause to benefit MES, a longstanding partner of Discovery Fund, one of the Corporate Social Investment arms of Discovery.

“MES deeply values our partnership with Discovery Fund. It is not just about financial support. There is heart, personal commitment, and sharing of resources through mentorship and training,” said MES chief executive officer Leona Pienaar.

MES is also a beneficiary of Discovery Vitality’s MoveToGive. This philanthropic crowd-sourcing platform on the Vitality app allows Vitality members to donate their rewards to a variety of causes that support communities around South Africa.

Pienaar, said, “We are passionate about making healthcare and nutrition part of MES services to the vulnerable communities we serve, and Discovery enables that further. We are delighted that MES was included in the winter soup drive. Thank you to everyone for opening their hearts, cooking soup, and visiting us in Hillbrow to meet the children.”
