Johannesburg Stock Exchange with Imbumba Foundation hosted a Trek4mandela 100-days event

The Imbumba aims to bring about social change and economic upliftment, within rural areas and economically organised communities in Southern Africa, through investing and mentoring individuals and communities who seek to uplift and empower themselves.

Imbumba Foundation and Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) hosted a Trek4Mandela 100-day countdown event at the JSE offices in Sandton.

This expedition was created to raise funds and awareness for the Caring4Girls initiative that forms part of Mandela Day. This year, Trek4Mandela is celebrating its 11 years with two expeditions in July for Mandela Day and in August for Women’s Day in honour of the 10th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s passing.

“We are here to celebrate the 2023 climbers who are welcomed to the programme. We thank all our partners and other organisations that supported us, as well as looking at what further opportunities will be presented to enable us to empower many girl children, said Sina Moyane, the Trek4Mandela manager.

Imbumba Foundation founder and CEO Richard Mabaso said he was inspired to start the foundation when his niece reached the stage of menstruation.

“I am grateful to the JSE for the ongoing support that they have given us to assist in the fight against period poverty through Trek4Mandela and Caring4Girls. I am excited about this year’s climbers – they come from all walks of life and will be journeying to reach the highest peak in Africa on Mandela Day and Women’s Day. Having reached a 10-year milestone last year, we are working very hard towards our 2030 goal of supporting all Quintile 1 to 3 schools with menstrual hygiene.”

One of this year’s climbers is a radio personality and SA FM broadcaster Songezo Mabece. He missed the opportunity to compete at the summit last year due to a lack of training.

Mabece said in his speech that last year’s rejection helped him to prepare physically and mentally for the journey.
