Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact.
Sandton Chronicle took to the streets of Sandton to ask if people know what autism is.
Here is what they have to say:
JEANDRE BARNARD: I think the government needs to teach people more about autism, my sister has something like autism, and not everyone knows about it.
CARLI HOFFMAN: I don’t think enough people have an idea of what autism is and are connected to autism, I think there must be more exposure
LES MALOKA: This is my first time hearing about the word autism and I don’t think most people are aware of what autism is
NTSAKO SITHOLE: I think the South African health government must accommodate people with autism because most people are not exposed to it
AMATLE JAMES: I know about autism and I think the government is not doing much to add help autism.
KUTLO JAMES: I personally do not think enough is being done because there are a lot of kids that are struggling in schools due to autism and a lot of adults.
LEE SINDI: I have no idea of what autism is and I think people must be taught about autism so that they can have an idea of what is it.
