Off-duty officer catches phone snatcher

An off-duty police officer of the Randburg Police Station chases two suspects in connection to a snatch and grab that occurred in Kensington.

An off-duty officer of the Randburg Police Station apprehended a suspect who had snatched a cellphone from an individual on February 17.

According to the spokesperson of the police station Captain Makgowanyana Maja, the officer witnessed the snatch and grab after which the suspect got into a getaway vehicle.

The incident which took place at the corner of Bond and Burke Street in Kensington involved two suspects.

The officer chased the getaway vehicle which resulted in the driver losing control and crashing into another car.

Both suspects attempted to flee on foot in opposite directions and the officer caught up with one of them.

“He (the officer) managed to catch him and upon a body search, the officer located the stolen item.”

The 20-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
