New Year brings new goals for Glenferness’s Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital

Funding and a larger inverter are at the top of the New Year wish list for the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.

With the festive season in full swing, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has its sights set on growth for the new year.

The veterinary hospital is based within the Glenferness area and is a rehabilitation centre solely dedicated to the treatment of injured wildlife. The end aim is full rehabilitation of the treated wildlife and successful release back into suitable habitat.

Some species they treat include raptors, serval, caracal, antelope and honey badgers, to name a few. All treatment of wildlife is free of charge and they rely heavily on the support of community and corporate sponsors to fund the hospital.

The wildlife treated at the veterinary hospital is not owned and brought in as a result of human or wildlife conflict, disaster, poisonings, illegal trade and poaching confiscations.

Co-founder and head veterinarian of the veterinary hospital Dr Karin Lourens last year mentioned a number of items the facility needs, however, she has one item on the wish list for the New Year.

“One of our biggest wish list items is a large inverter. Load-shedding is here to stay and for us to work as efficiently as possible we would really like an inverter.

“We are trying to upgrade our hospital facilities and we hope to finalise this goal early in 2023. Out with the old and in with the new. What help we really require is funding, especially so that we can employ more staff.”

She thanked all loyal supporters of the hospital. “We would not be able to do what we do without their help. Whether from donations or even a kind comment on Facebook, our supporters carry us through the toughest times.”
