This is how a local mother took up crocheting to support her family

Local mother Christine Gamuchirai Zari, famously known to the Bryanston and Sandton community for her crocheted teddy bears, hopes to one day open her shop.

Meet Christine Gamuchirai Zari, a local mother and small business owner who crochets teddy bears to provide for her family.

The 22-year-old started her journey as a small business owner of Christine’s Teddy Bears in 2017 when she was forced to drop out of school due to financial reasons.

“A friend of mine taught me how to crotchet and l borrowed money from my mom to start buying materials.”

Fast forward five years and her creations have found homes across Johannesburg north and beyond.

Zari added that the communities in Bryanston, Randburg and Fourways, in particular, have supported her tremendously over the years, not only purchasing from her but also referring her to friends and family.

“I make a selection of teddy bears that I sell at markets, I used to sell at the corner of Bryanston Drive and Wilton Avenue and also at the Prison Break Market near Kyalami.

Christine Gamuchirai Zari thanks the community for its continued support.

“I also now take custom orders that can be couriered to anywhere in the country,” she said.

Zari added despite the challenges of Covid-19, she continued to grow her business with the goal of one day officially opening her very own shop.
