How to combat computer vision syndrome

With the rise in technology & work from home culture, more people suffer from computer vision syndrome. What is it & how can it be prevented?

As the world progresses more and more into a digital age, many people are finding themselves suffering from what is now known as computer vision syndrome. While this phenomenon was unheard of ten years ago, it seems that it will be around well into the future. But what is it exactly? Can it be treated, and is it preventable?

While there is no scientific proof that prolonged computer use causes permanent damage to the eye, it does cause computer vision syndrome, causing discomfort and irritation.

Because most people are familiar with the saying “prevention is better than cure”, here is some information on computer vision syndrome and how to best alleviate its symptoms.

What causes computer vision syndrome?

Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, typically describes eye and vision problems associated with the prolonged use of computers, tablets or smartphones.

People who spend extended periods online may experience eye discomfort or vision problems.

What are the symptoms of computer vision?

  • Back or neck pain
  • Red dry eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Headaches
  • Eye irritation
  • Sensitivity to light and glare

What are the risk factors for computer vision syndrome?

Any individual who spends 2 or more hours behind the screen of a computer is at risk of computer vision syndrome.

How is computer vision syndrome diagnosed?

To properly diagnose computer vision syndrome, a comprehensive eye examination by an eye care professional such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist must rule out other medical conditions such as cataracts and keratoconus.

How is computer vision treated?

Treatment largely depends on the diagnosis and if there are other medical or visual conditions present that affect your eye health. Other treatments can include;

  • Behavioural changes
  • Corrective lenses
  • Vision therapy

How to combat computer vision syndrome

  1. Blink more often. While blinking is not done intentionally and is more of a natural reflex, reminding yourself to blink more often while working on a digital device can help to combat computer vision syndrome.
  2. Minimise the glare on your computer screen. Position your computer at an angle that avoids catching the ray from natural light filtering through the window. Invest in a lower-watt lightbulb to reduce glare and combat computer vision syndrome.
  3. Focus and refocus. Use the 20/20 rule by looking away from your computer screen and focusing on something in the distance for 20 seconds.
  4. Limit your screen time, especially when you don’t have to work.
  5. Take frequent breaks while working online.

Computer vision can be easily combated with the information provided above. Consult a cataract specialist for more severe vision problems, and get your eyes tested today!
