Sandton police call for proactive community to fight crime

At a recent Imbizo with the Sandton police and Sandton CPF in Sector 3, visible policing head Colonel Cain Sibitane encouraged residents to be the 'eyes and ears' of the community.

Fighting crime in Sandton will require residents to become more proactive and united.

This was according to Sandton Police Station’s Colonel Cain Sibitane, head of visible policing, at the latest Imbizo for Sector 3 with the Sandton CPF at the Field and Study Park in Parkmore on August 13.

Sibitane, alongside Sector 3 commander Captain VP Moleya, spoke to residents about the importance of working not only with the police but also the CPF to create a safer community.

“When we talk about the CPF, we talk about the community and the engagement of the community with the police. The community helps to hold the police to account all while assisting them to do their job.”

Sector 3 includes, but is not limited to, the suburbs of Benmore, Morningside, Parkmore and Sandown, making it Sandton’s largest sector in the policing precinct.

Sandton CPF Sector 3 chairperson Lori Klein encouraged residents who were not already on their respective community’s communication channels to please do so.

“This will help speed up the process of redirecting residents to the right contacts when they see or experience anything suspicious.”

Sibitane emphasised that if residents or the police work in isolation, it will give criminals an advantage.

“That is why, when criminals target you, they make sure to look for a community which is not united, especially with the mindset of ‘mind your own business’. We are not saying for members of the community to confront criminals, but they have to be the eyes and ears,” he said.

Also in attendance, Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford specifically called on the community’s retirees to get in communication with the Sandton CPF as they spend more time in the community and see what is happening around them.
