Padel tennis is a new serve at Rivonia Recreation Club

Two new padel tennis courts put in by Padel Lab were the highlight of the day at Rivonia Recreation Club as they were launched at the sports club.

Community members and avid local lovers of padel tennis got to enjoy the newly built courts at Paulshof’s Rivonia Recreation Club on July 23.

Padel Lab and Rivonia Recreation Club have joined forces to bring the sport of padel tennis to community members at the two new courts. Players can rent the racquets for a fun game where badminton, tennis and square are combined.

The day consisted of multiple games of King of the Court where doubles teams would play various matches and winners would stay on the court to continue playing.

Raffle draws and competitions also took place throughout the day for attendees to win various prizes.
Financial director of Padel Lab Andrew Cox was pleased at the turnout for the day’s launch. He said there are many more who have booked the courts for the coming weekends.

He added that there is a definite aim to the club – padel tennis excellence.

“The club is planning on putting grass tennis courts on the other bowling green, so the club will encompass the different types of tennis available at the club. At a later stage, we’re planning on putting in an additional three courts on the bowling greens here at the club.

“With us now being in the winter months, it’s a little bit of a colder time to play. However, once it gets a bit warmer, we could see that the courts will be booked for 10 hours, and that’s what we’re hoping for.
“You can see a lot of people like and enjoy the sport and have a lot of fun, and that’s what we aim to see.”

Cox added that the number of people who came to the launch exceeded the expectation of all those involved in organising the launch as over 500 people had registered to play on the courts.

Two local padel tennis players, Chloe Bertrand and Cameron Stone, were also at the launch and got to play on the court. Both said while it had been some time since playing the sport, they were impressed with the facilities at the club.

Bertrand said, “The sport is really big in Europe, and we’ve noticed the growth of it here in South Africa.
“We would absolutely come back and play here, we really had a great time.”
