Station Commander of Sandton proud of the youth

The youth of Sandton leads by example as they put the focus on the future rather than crime according to the Sandton Police Station Commander.

Recently, Sandton Police Station officials have been faced with numerous challenges involving theft, house robberies and fraud.

As part of their quest of eradicating criminal activities in certain locations, officials are pleased that the majority of crimes are not being committed by the youth.

Station Commander Brigadier Egen Moodley, was more than thrilled to share that the youth of Sandton has been on the right side of the tracks in regard to the members of his team and outside of the station.

Moodley explained how the station interacts with the youth, “We have a young team in the social crime prevention and they will go out to engage more with the youth in different events and locations. The interaction with the officials is not random at all, they have similar ways of thinking and talking – unlike when I talk to them. We need to relate with everyone.”

He added that the majority of serious crimes in Sandton are usually committed by individuals over the age of 30. “We don’t have a lot of crime involving the youth. When we do get reports of the youth committing criminal acts, it’s usually petty theft, shoplifting and drug-related acts. I think that the youth are quite focused on their future through education and we see that with the increase of schools and colleges around our area.”

Moodley concluded that their main goal is to build a healthy relationship with the youth centred on trust. “We don’t want to be seen as people feared, but rather as protectors of the communities and people who prevent crime from happening.”
