Joburg water aware of aging infrastructure in Bryanston

Johannesburg Water says that it is aware of the frustrations facing households in Bryanston as results of continuous pipe bursts.

Johannesburg Water has confirmed that a work request has been prepared to undertake a pipe replacement in the Bryanston area following frustrations over ageing infrastructure.

As previously outlined in the article Frustration continues over ageing infrastructure in Bryanston [Week ending June 10] residents along Daniel, Witney, Halifax and Bath streets have experienced eight pipe bursts in May, spanning a 500m radius.

This has left many households with flooded driveways and little to no water running from their taps.

In response, spokesperson Seipati Nyawuza confirmed that the entity is aware of the issues surrounding the current state of the infrastructure in Bryanston.

“These burst pipes are due to ageing infrastructure, the existing pipe [in this particular area] is a 75mm AC (asbestos cement) pipe which was installed in the year 1963.” Nyawuza added that a team had been arranged to backfill all the open excavations at the mentioned streets.

In an update to residents in Ward 102 councillor David Potter noted that the issues around ageing infrastructure extend far beyond Bryanston.

“In Ward 102, which spans over 16 square kilometres, the suburbs of Mill Hill, sections of Bryanston and Blairgowrie have had water pipe replacements completed over the years. Frustratingly, the replacement of water pipes is now as smooth and easy as one envisions it to be.”

He added that at every opportunity, ward councillors continue to champion necessary infrastructure upgrades.
