Sandton motorists address the expensive elephant in the room

What does the change in fuel prices mean for you?

With a fuel increase of more than R3 per litre expected next week, the Sandton Chronicle team asked motorists what their thoughts were on the increase and what impact it would have in their daily routines?

SABELO MAKGOTLA TSHABALALA: This is definitely going to affect how we eat and also how we move from place to place. People can barely afford bread and milk. If you are spending more than what you are making on gas, and you’re starving, you are not living. Photo: Motlatsi Mailula
LETHABO KGOLANE: For me I think it’s to buy a bicycle or at least start walking to my office. The fuel price increase does not only affect us as motorists but it also affects us as a whole. It will create a ripple effect in the relationship between the economy and society. The cost of living will eventually be a lot. Photo: Motlatsi Mailula
INAMULLAH RIEAZ AHMAD: I am aware of the fuel increase and I am not happy at all. It’s really expensive to have a car. Photo: Motlatsi Mailula
JON LE ROUX: For me, it’s very simple. I am going to be driving a lot less. Every time I have to go out I will plan if it’s worth going out. I will put a money value on any time I have to drive somewhere and I’m also going to Uber more. Photo: Motlatsi Mailula
DERYNNE KLAVER: In my line of work I am required to be on the road almost all the time. So I honestly need to be more aware of expense claims even though this is a Catch 22. What I put in is what I get out, I can’t be conservative. I’m going to have to adjust. Photo: Motlatsi Mailula
WINSTON TSHABALALA: This basically means that I have to construct a whole new budget and just try to save as much as I can for the rainy days. Photo: Motlatsi Mailula
ANNA LORAINE GWIBA: The increase is going to cripple a lot of small businesses. I am a freelance makeup artist so we cannot increase our prices. For example, I’ve been charging people R850 for my services. If I change the prices to accommodate the current times, I will eventually lose customers Photo: Supplied
