Local diver to represent SA in world champs

Local athlete Bailey Heydra continues to live out her diving dreams on the international stage after being selected to represent SA at the Fina World Championships.

Former Sandton resident Bailey Heydra continues to live out her diving dreams on the international stage.

Heydra was recently selected to represent South Africa at the 19th Fina World Championships in June.

Hosted in Budapest, Hungary from June 19 to July 3, this year’s championships will the world’s best athletes go head-to-head across an array of aquatic sports.

“Being selected to represent South Africa at the Fina World Championships is something that I have dreamed of for a really long time. This will be the first major event that I represent South Africa as a senior and not a junior,” she said.

The former St Stithians College diving captain is no stranger to wearing the green and gold colours, having previously represented South Africa twice at the World Junior Diving Championships.

She added that competing in the champions will give her the experience of diving against some of the world’s top divers.

“[It will] give me the opportunity to learn from them and grow as a diver. I am extremely excited to compete in this event and make my country proud.”

Heydra currently attends the University of Nevanda in Reno, Nevada in the USA after she was awarded a diving scholarship. Her goal remains to compete at the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.
