Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association prepares for big tournament

Sandton school learners celebrate after being selected to play in the inter-provincial soccer tournament for the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association.

The Discovery Soccer Festival, organised by the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association [JPSFA], saw a total of 195 learners from 120 primary schools competing against each other.

With winning on their minds, the ultimate drive for standing out was directed at the selection phase for the inter-provincial tournament – the Bill Stewart tournament.

Players in the U13 division from all parts of Johannesburg were given the platform to display their talents on the soccer pitches of Greek Sporting Club in Germiston. Montrose Primary School, HeronBridge College and Bryneven Primary School were among the schools that a few local players represented.

The two-day tournament, which began on May 4, concluded with 45 players being selected for the JPSFA squad. According to the Montrose Primary School head of boys’ sports and culture Mokhosi Makara, the 45 selected players will be split up into three teams: Southerns (A team), Jo’burg (B team) and Wits (C team) in preparation of the Bill Stewart tournament.

Makara who was appointed as one of the convener of selectors, hopes to have at least one of the three teams taking the first place title.

“We have a strong squad of talented 45 players and a group of very knowledgeable coaches and managers to make sure that winning is inevitable. We have, in the past won the inter-provincial tournament more than any other team so we are confident for this year’s tournament,” said Makara.

The Bill Stewart tournament will commence on June 30 and conclude on July 4.
