No sleep for residents of Plantation Road due to water pipe bursts

Residents situated in Plantation Road have reported over 10 water pipe bursts to Johannesburg Water this year and are hoping that the issue will be resolved soon.

Plantation Road residents have been in the centre of multiple water pipe bursts since the beginning of the year. According to Nicola Thomson, a resident who has been living in the area for more than a year, the road has had a total of 15 water pipe bursts.

The residential area located in Bryanston recently had its 15th water pipe burst of the year. The matter has brought residents down to their knees as they pleaded for a fast solution. It was stated by Thomson that residents did not have the means of water for a duration of 60 hours.

Residents were woken up in the early hours of April 5 by the sound of running water hitting their ceiling and quickly reacted by contacting Johannesburg Water. The entity was able to temporarily fix the damaged pipes on the day and later identified that the issue was far from being fully repaired.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg Water Puleng Mopeli had feedbacks from representatives who were able to identify the cause of pipe bursts. “The cause for the recurring burst pipes on Plantation Road in Bryanston is mainly because of ageing of the infrastructure as this street is still using 100mm AC pipes. We have prepared the work request for the particular street and other streets in the vicinity which are still using AC pipes. We are awaiting approval from the Planning Department so this matter is prioritised.”

Thomson concluded, “It’s one of those neighbourhoods where you find people walking their dogs around 19:00 and see children riding their bikes with smiles on their faces. I just want everything to go back to how things were, beautiful. I do thank the hard work from Johannesburg Water and hope that the matter gets resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
