Local schools team up to clean the spruit

PARKMORE – The group spent the morning of March 27 filling up 45 large refuse bags with plastic waste from the banks.

Learners from St Stithians College and Roedean School recently joined forces to clean up a section of the Braamfontein Spruit in the Field and Study Park in Parkmore.

The group spent the morning of March 27 filling up 45 large refuse bags with plastic waste from the banks.

According to the St Stithians College’s director of community engagement, Senamile Ngidi, the aim of the clean-up and community engagement as a whole is for volunteers to make a practical difference in the community.

“It makes such good sense to be involved in the protection and preservation of a community asset which is right on the doorstep of the college campuses.”

The Saints community engagement group has organised a number of Spruit clean-ups over the years.

On this occasion, Pick n Pay on Nicol joined the initiative by donating bottled water and fruit to the volunteers.

Fidelity ADT sponsored security guards at the park entrance and guards who patrolled the park. Transpaco donated the refuse bags.

Also joining the group was Sergeant Mac Dlodlo of the Randburg Police Station who not only watched over the learners but also allowed the learners to lock their valuables in the back of his police van.

“I would like to express appreciation from Friends of the Field and Study Park (Fofs) to all the participants and sponsors for their hard work and community spiritedness with this project,” said Friends of the Field and Study Park chairperson Rose Johnson.

She added that one hidden benefit from the project is that many of the people involved would come back to the park with their families and friends.
