Like the weather, crime is unpredictable and when detected by the victim, it’s often too late to prevent or to escape. For homeowners situated in Sandton, a number of tips and techniques will ensure the protection of your family and property, all it takes is observation and communication.

Fihla’s list of safety tips for homeowners and travellers:

  • Security lights on the outside of the house improve the physical protection of a house, and are a deterrent to criminals.
  • Ensure that when you are not at home, all doors are locked at all times and that windows are closed.
  • If you leave your home, inform your family and neighbours of your intended destination and expected time of return.
  • Ensure that tools such as spades, picks, ladders and many more that can be used in an attack, are locked away when not in use.
  • Vary your daily routine and the route you travel to work and back.
  • Clear the areas around the gates of bushes and other hiding places.
  • Do not employ casual workers without a reference.
  • Inform your children not to give an indication that adult supervision is not available.
  • Change locks when keys get lost.
  • If strangers loiter near or at your driveway, rather drive past. If they loiter for a long time report it to your nearest police station.
  • Be aware of occupied vehicles parked near your home, the occupants might be staking out the area. Take note of the vehicle make, colour and registration numbers.
