Sandton police captain leaves no room for error

MORNINGSIDE – Captain Refilwe Monaiwa of the Sandton police fights off fraud-related crime with the help of his team and his decades of experience.

Captain Refilwe Monaiwa of the Sandton Police Station has been serving the community for more than 23 years. What many don’t know about the captain is that his calling called him through one of his friends in high school.

Born in Seshego, Limpopo, Monaiwa joined the police force with no thought that he would be assisting his community with serious criminal offences at the time.

“I started working as a police officer in 1991 at a small location called Ga-Kgapane,” he said.
“One of my friends, who was working as a police officer, called me when I was looking for work after completing high school. He led me to the profession that I’m currently in and I have never looked back.
“When I was working at home [Limpopo] I was working on every case you could think of. I was working on solving cases involving rape, murder, assault, housebreaking and many more. When I relocated to Johannesburg, that’s when I got assigned to help the team with serious violence.”

After working at the police station in Limpopo for seven years, Monaiwa received news that he would be joining the Sandton police team. He relocated in 1998 to assist the community of Sandton with the prevention of crime.

With his vast knowledge and experience, the captain fully acknowledges that he still has a lot of learning when dealing with solving crimes that are connected with fraud. Monaiwa started tackling fraud in 2012 and his team of eight officers work day in and day out to ensure the safety of the potential fraud victims in Sandton.

“My position as the captain working in the fraud department is to advise the general public to refrain from being dependent on the exchange of goods and money through the means of technology. It’s a gateway to becoming a victim. If you are not sure about the legitimacy of an organisation, ask questions. There’s no shame in that and our doors are always open to the community,” concluded Monaiwa.
