Hard work pays off for Brescia House coach

BRYANSTON – The South African Sports Awards recently recognised local athletes and officials who excelled worldwide from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2021.

Brescia House School’s head of sports Michelle Joubert was recently recognised for her exemplary work as an umpire on the international stage.

Joubert was awarded the Minister’s Excellence Award at the South African Sports Awards, held in Durban on March 12.

The awards recognise South African athletes and officials who excelled worldwide from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2021.

According to Joubert, while it feels great to be recognised for her hard work and commitment to the sport, the accolades are not why she joined the sport.

“I have always had a passion for sport, especially hockey, and I know that now is my time to step aside to allow others the opportunity to continue representing South Africa at the top levels,” said Joubert.

“I am humbled not only by this award but for every opportunity I have had throughout my career.”

As an international hockey umpire, Joubert has officiated a number of international games across the globe. She more recently had the honour of being one of South Africa’s five hockey officials at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

She added that none of these achievements would have been possible without the support of her friends, family and colleagues.

“I will always remain true to myself, remember my humble beginnings, and stay true to the values which were instilled in me at a very young age.”

Joubert has always had a passion for working with children, believing that everyone has ‘potential, talent and something to give’. “It is through teaching and coaching that we [coaches] play such an important role to allow these young individuals to experience life, prepare them for life outside the school environment, and allow them to develop, grow and become the best versions of themselves.”

Brescia House School head of the high school, Loredana Borello, added that the school has always admired Joubert’s passion and drive.

“We are so incredibly proud of her and proud to have someone who is so experienced and enthusiastic on our team. Our learners are not only benefitting from her expertise but also from her commitment to long term physical well-being, regardless of the sport or activity.”
