Local hockey team takes the championship

ILLOVO – According to coach Spencer Botes, the girls have grown tremendously this year.

The Wanderers Hockey Club’s U13 girls team recently took home the championship win at the Southern Gauteng Indoor League.

The league, which began in September last year, took place at the Cliffview Primary School in Northcliff. This was the second consecutive year the team concluded the league in first place.

According to coach Spencer Botes, the girls have grown tremendously over the year. “It has been amazing to see how the girls’ indoor hockey ability has grown over the season and watching them showcase all the new skills they have learnt over the season is incredibly rewarding as a coach.”

Botes added for many of the girls, this was their first time playing indoor hockey. “They quickly picked up the ins and outs of indoor hockey, including learning to use the side-boards to make beautiful passes to each other.

“Seeing how happy the girls are when they are on the court and competing is the reason why I coach junior hockey.”

Botes plays for the national indoor hockey team as well as the Wanderers men’s first team.

The U13 team looks forward to defending their title later this year when the league kicks off once again in September.
