Community urged to support Forest Farm Centre

BRYANSTON – Despite the smooth sailing operation and being in high spirits, Forest Farm Centre does face everyday challenges.

Forest Farm Centre has been on a mission to provide nature and nurture to adults suffering from cerebral palsy and those dealing with other physical challenges.

The non-profit organisation, located in Bryanston, has been a safe haven for many residents since its opening back in 1968. It follows a motto that helps them navigate their main priorities: compassion, commitment and care.

Adults living in the residential area suffer from numerous physical disabilities. Cerebral palsy – the main physical disorder individuals at the centre face – affects the mobility of an individual. Adults living with this condition need daily assistance complete do important tasks such as bathing, eating and travelling.

Despite the smooth sailing operation and being in high spirits, the organisation does face everyday challenges.

Peter Lombard, who has been volunteering at the centre since 2020, said, “Families of adults disappear or pass away and that’s something that cannot be controlled. Adults become orphans without the means of any financial resources. What the organisation has done is sponsor the adults, which is similar to adopting them. We currently have 21 adults that we sponsor at the organisation. We are looking at R10 600 per adult every month. Our big focus this year is to spread the awareness on cerebral palsy within our communities and to raise more funds for the centre.”

The centre organises activities to encourage residents to learn, enjoy the stimulation and have fun, such as the Valentine’s Day event hosted in February.

Lombard concluded, “Society can have a view that the residents are not normal and that is incorrect. They are very much normal, just physically challenged. Even with our upcoming fundraising events, the organisation is in dire need of support from our community. We kindly ask if the community can sponsor some of our residents, any form of support will be appreciated at the centre.”
