Old Petrians celebrates 17 years of sports tournaments at St Peter’s College

SUNNINGHILL – For its 17th year, the Old Petrians tournament at St Peter’s College sees almost 400 people from around the country on the school grounds supporting teams and enjoying sports.

The Old Petrians tournament took place at St Peter’s College from February 24 to 27, running for its 17th year at the school.

The tournament started 17 years ago to celebrate girls’ water polo when there were no tournaments at such a high level.

At the time, there were only one or two regional events since there was a heavy focus on boys’ water polo. Basketball was included in this year’s tournament for the first time and 20-over cricket was in its sixth year.

Schools such as Fourways High School, the Reddam House schools, Michael Mount, St Dunstan’s, St Mary’s Waverley and many more from around the country participated.

The sports coordinator at the school Christelle van Schalkwyk said on the day, “In total, we have around 400 people on campus for the tournament. I think it is good preparation for our sports and cultural festival that takes place in September which has more than 1 000 people.

“It’s a good preparation for us after Covid to get back into the planning side of things and make sure everything runs smoothly.”
