Brescia House joins the fight against GBV

BRYANSTON – To show their support for the campaign the school came together on the field to recreate this year’s symbol, an emoji with a mask, while singing and dancing to Mango Groove’s Fan to the Sun.

The Brescia House School community joined in on this year’s 9th One Billion Rising campaign.

The worldwide campaign, which was launched on Valentine’s Day in 2012, is aimed at ending violence against all women.

According to the school’s head of counselling and community outreach Liz Norman, it was important for the school to get on board as it resonated with the Brescia House School ethos.

“The initiative speaks so clearly to our own mission and ethos – to educating our pupils in terms of their rights and responsibilities as citizens of this country, to encouraging belief in themselves as worthy and meaningful members of society, and to hold their heads high as ‘women who matter’.”

The school has been supporting the initiative since 2013 when Norman initially introduced the campaign to the school after hearing about it on a radio broadcast.

“This year, Brescia House School joined the world in the 9th One Billion Rising event to hope for a future where all women, children and the earth flourish in a joyful symbiosis.

“When women and girls feel safe in their bodies, they come into their power. Women’s bodies hold entire communities, nurturing and caring for them, and keeping them alive against all odds.”

To show their support for the campaign, the learners and staff from across the campus came together on the field to recreate this year’s symbol, an emoji with a mask, while singing and dancing to Mango Groove’s Fan to the Sun.

Norman added that the song speaks of finding reasons for the things that matter most and living your best life.
