City drives to restore road integrity after increased rains

JOBURG – The initiative prioritises roads that are more frequently used, impacting more road users, as a result, causing more damage.

City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse has reaffirmed the Pothole Patrol’s initiative to restore the integrity of the City’s roads following the increased levels of rain.

The initiative, which kick-started in Sandton in May last year by former executive mayor Geoff Makhubo, is a partnership between the Johannesburg insurance firms Dial Direct Insure and Discovery Insurance.

The partnership has resulted in the repair of over 75 000 potholes on municipal roads thus far.

According to Phalatse, the partnership is bearing fruit and the City has thrown its weight behind it once again to deal with the pothole problem in the metro.

“The Pothole Patrol initiative has proven to fix potholes across Johannesburg at a greater pace, to the benefit of the City’s residents,” she said

Phalatse added that the City’s roads infrastructure has become more vulnerable because of the rainy season as the state of the roads continues to deteriorate.

“We are therefore thankful for this partnership and its investment in Johannesburg’s road infrastructure,” said the mayor.

MMC for Transport Funzela Ngobeni added that in addition to the partnership, all road-related service delivery is on track for a major boost as all Johannesburg Roads Agency depot workers are set to return to work on a full-time basis.
