Rise above the challenges

SANDTON – The learners, department officials, sponsors and guardians gathered at the Capital on the Park in Sandton on 11 February to celebrate their hard work.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development celebrated the achievements of the orphans and neglected children that formed part of its Class of 2021 programme.

The learners, department officials and sponsors gathered at the Capital on the Park in Sandton on 11 February to celebrate their achievements.

According to Kebareng Ntwampe, a social worker from the department, it is programmes like this that not only help boost learners to take a step in their schooling career but it also gives them a chance to make something of themselves.

Not only did these learners pass their matric year, but they also did so despite all the challenges thrown their way, rising above all odds and through hard work.

“As a department, we are delighted to once more host this event to honour and bestow top achievers who, despite numerous challenges, managed to excel in the 2021 matric examinations.”

Ntwampe added that as a social worker, moments like these make all of the hard work and long hours all the more worth it.

Former alumni of the social programme and current medical technologist, Pontso Simelane encouraged the learners to continue on their path, not letting anything distract them from their goals.

“I challenge you [the learners] to say that I have made it this far with all the aid from the department, the social workers, your family and society, what are you going to do with it now?”
