Crime stats put Sandton top of the commercial crimes list

SANDTON – The national statistics for the second quarter (July 1 to September 30) were recently shared by police minister Bheki Cele.

The latest crime statistics have put the Sandton Police Station at the top of the list as the station with the most number of commercial crimes reported between July and September this year.

The national statistics for the second quarter (July 1 to September 30) were recently shared by police minister Bheki Cele.

According to Cele, the crime figures appear inflated as the country was under lockdown levels four, three and two at the time of the last comparable quarter.

“These crime figures are certainly not reflecting a crime holiday, they are neither as alarming as the previous quarter figures which were skewed, as figures of a period that had no Lockdown restrictions, were compared to a period, where the country was placed under hard lockdown.”

The Sandton Police Station ranked among the top 10 stations for the most commercial crime (273 incidents), other serious crimes (578 incidents) and truck-jacking (nine incidents).

The station itself, however, saw the highest increase in reports of robbery with aggravating circumstances – there was an increase of 37 incidents, amounting to a total of 155 reported incidents.

A decrease was reported in three categories; common assault, burglary at non-residential premises, shoplifting and all theft not mentioned elsewhere.

The Sandton Police Station Commander continually urges members of the community to report all criminal activities or any suspicious movement happening in the area to Crime Stop 08600 10111 or Sandton Police Station 011 722 4200.
