Bramley police raises awareness

MARLBORO – Officers, joined by members of the station’s youth desk, visited the informal settlement known as Setjwela.

Bramley police officers took to the streets of Marlboro Gardens for a door-to-door awareness campaign as part of the 16 Day of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children on December 7.

Officers, joined by members of the station’s youth desk, visited the informal settlement known as Setjwela to help educate residents about gender-based violence and how they could seek help.

“Unlike other days when residents would see the police during their patrols in the area, on this day members were knocking at the doors to raise awareness about gender-based violence,” said Bramley Police Station spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi.

He added that residents were encouraged to break the silence on domestic violence, sexual offences or any violence based on gender.

Officers also distributed educational pamphlets to the community which provided additional information about domestic violence, the course of action for victims, protection orders, sexual offences and how one could identify if they have been abused.

Mogodi said the Social Crime Prevention coordinator had also partnered with trained volunteers who were operating from the victim-friendly room at the station to assist more residents in need.

“Violence against women and children is never acceptable, never excusable and never tolerable,” said Mogodi. Details: Stop Gender-based Violence hotline 0800 150 150; SAPS emergency line 10111.
